South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has appointed Magistrate Judge Matthew McCafferty Brown of Custer ’96 as a circuit court judge in South Dakota’s Seventh Circuit Court in Rapid City.

Brown will fill a new judgeship in the Seventh Circuit, which includes Custer, Fall River, Oglala Lakota and Pennington counties, that was created by the 2015 State Legislature. Brown currently serves as a magistrate judge in the Seventh Circuit, a position he has held since 2014. Prior to that service, he worked for Black Hills Legal Services, for the Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office and for the Custer County State’s Attorney’s Office. He has also served as a special assistant attorney general.

In addition to being a ’96 Gustie graduate, Brown is also a 1999 graduate of The University of South Dakota School of Law.
