Gustavus will host Professor Cathy Cohen, author and professor in political science at the University of Chicago, for the 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture on Jan. 21. Cohen is one of the nation’s leading scholars of race and politics, and is the recipient of numerous awards for her work. She is the author of The Boundaries of Blackness: AIDS and the Breakdown of Black Politics, and Democracy Remixed: Black Youth and the Future of American Politics. Cohen is also an editor of a new book series from Oxford Press titled “Transgressing Boundaries: Studies in Black Politics and Black Communities”. Her lecture at Gustavus will focus on, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Age of Obama: Building a New Movement for the 21st Century”. Gustavus’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial lecture is on Monday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
