joyceThe Offices of the Provost and Alumni Relations are excited to introduce a new semi-annual series for lifelong learners, Gustavus Passion for Lifelong Learning. Join Twin Cities Gusties on Thursday, March 14, at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis for the inaugural event: an evening of poetry with Joyce Sutphen, professor of English at Gustavus. Dr. Sutphen has taught at Gustavus for 20 years and also serves as the poet laureate for the State of Minnesota.

We live fast and busy lives; we can hold up a phone and find listings for the nearest restaurants or the names of the stars above us. How can poems—those little printed shapes on a page—matter? Robert Frost said that poetry is a “momentary stay against confusion,” and that sounds helpful for our times. Come and discover (or be reminded) how poetry can teach us to slow down and love the moments and particulars of the world.

A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. with program starting at 7:30 p.m. Registration is requested. Register online at gustavus.edu/go/plls. The cost is $10 per person. For more information, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@gustavus.edu or 800-487-8437.

The next event will feature Gustavus alumnus David Jones ’83 on Nov. 19, 2013, discussing the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.
