CIRCE: A Musical Odyssey by Maggie K. Sotos ’09

thing-1.jpgMaggie K. Sotos ’09 turns Homer’s “Odyssey” upside down and inside out with “CIRCE: A Musical Odyssey”.

After becoming the fastest-selling ticket of the 2012 MN Fringe Festival with “TROY! The Musical”, as well as earning a 5-Star Must See rating by the Pioneer Press and the TC Daily Planet, Sotos and an army of Gustie grads take on the next chapter of the hero(ine)’s journey with their epic retelling of “The Odyssey” (as seen from the eyes of Circe, Odysseus’ ex-girlfriend).

On his way home from the Trojan War, the mighty Odysseus wooes the mysterious and rogue sorceress Circe, only to leave her abruptly one year later. Crushed, demoralized, but armed with her best friend Hecate (the Goddess of Crossroads), the stubborn Circe sets off to win back her former lover, criss-crossing the ancient world in search of her illusive quarry. Her perilous travels bring her eye to eye with the monstrous Cyclops, the enchanting sea nymph Calypso, Odysseus’ sultry wife Penelope, the deadly Sirens of the Sea, as well as a few personal demons of her own.

Combining her History major with her English and Theater minors, Sotos’ play is truly the product of a liberal arts education. “CIRCE” fuses the ancient texts and classic Greek history with musical theater jazz hands and toe-tapping numbers. A comedy with brains, guts and heart, it’s the feel-good musical of the summer.

Rounding out the star-studded cast are Gustavus alums Max Beyer ’12, Benjamin H. Kolis ’12, Andrea Gullixson ’10 and Logan Martin ’06.
