“Dear Gustavus,

My name is Samuel Grace. I am a 2011 alumnus and Founding Artistic Director of MPLS (imPulse), a 24-voice festival chamber chorus based in Minneapolis. I am writing to inform you of our upcoming performances in October, which will be held at The Minneapolis Central Library Atrium and The American Swedish Institute. There are nine Gusties involved in this project, including myself.

Many of the singing members of MPLS (imPulse) are very close friends of mine. The wonderful thing about the festival model is that I don’t need to ask singing members to make weekly rehearsal commitments, which is something I’ve never wanted to ask my friends to do. Instead, I have the ability to make music and develop my professional career with my friends, many of which I sang together with in the Gustavus Choir, and that’s a an experience I couldn’t replicate anywhere else.

Our upcoming performances, titled “On Being,” encourages audiences to reflect on the shared experiences in our lives. The performance will feature an eclectic mix of selections by Scandinavian composers Per Nørgård, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, and Hugo Alfvén, as well as music by Twin Cities composers Edie Hill, Jocelyn Hagen, and Tim Takach. The performances are approximately 45 minutes in duration.
